American Sign Language
American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual language allowing communication for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. With signing, the brain can process linguistic meaning through the eyes instead of the ears. The movement and shape of the hands, as well as facial expressions and body movements, all contribute to the communication of information.
“Living languages” like American Sign Language (ASL) grow and change over time, similar to spoken languages. And like spoken languages, ASL is a dynamic language with its own specific rules for grammar and syntax. While American Sign Language (ASL) is not yet universal globally, it is widely used in the United States and in Canada.
People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing must have the ability to interact and communicate with those around them. As such, Universal Interpreting only hires experienced, qualified ASL Interpreters.
A quality Sign Language Interpreter is one who can interpret effectively and accurately, remaining completely impartial throughout the process. American Sign Language Interpreters must have highly developed signing skills and the ability to convey any necessary specialized terminology so that messages are communicated clearly and accurately to the recipient.
